What if You’re the At-Fault Driver?
Repairing Your Collision Damage if You’re Responsible
Most of us believe that we’re good drivers. We pay attention, drive the speed limit, eliminate distractions, and avoid accidents. But they’re called accidents for a reason, mistakes happen and cars smash into each other. That is why Big Sky Collision Center is here, we strive to be the best auto body shop in Billings so that you can have peace of mind when it comes to getting your vehicle repaired.
Collisions are inconvenient when you’re not at fault. Most often the other driver will have insurance that will cover the costs of repairing your vehicle. But what happens if you’re the at-fault driver? If you’re responsible, now the inconvenience is even bigger. Here’s what to expect.
Working with Your Insurance Company
If you have insurance on your vehicle, then you will have to organize with them to have the repairs done in a timely manner. Most likely they will refer you to one of their preferred collision repair shops. While you can use their suggestion, you don’t have to. In Montana you get the choice of which auto body shop to use for repairs.
If you have towing coverage, the insurance company may work directly with the tow company, or reimburse you for expenses. Once the vehicle has been pulled to Big Sky Collision Center, we will work directly with your insurance to make sure the repairs are done completely and correctly. When the vehicle is done, all that you owe is the amount of your deductible.
Keep in mind that if your vehicle is older, or the damage is extensive, it may be deemed a total loss. That is, the cost to repair the vehicle exceeds the value of the vehicle.
Paying for Repairs Out-of-Pocket
If the damage is relatively minor, you may not want to get insurance involved. Too many claims and your insurance could choose not to renew your policy. If nothing else, your rates are going to go up the next time your policy renews. You can get around these issues by paying for the damages out of pocket.
Suppose the damage to your vehicle will cost $900 to repair. And let’s suppose that you have a $500 deductible. This means that insurance is only going to pay for $400 of the repairs. If it means a $25 per month rate increase for 12 months, those repairs will in actuality cost you $800 and a blemish on your no claims record.
It hurts to write a $900 check instead of a $400 one, but it might be worthwhile to discuss things with your insurance agent well before you make any claims.
