Will Electric Cars Become The Norm?
Electric Cars are Gaining Popularity
An electric car or an electric vehicle (EV) is a vehicle that is powered by an electric motor, rather than a conventional gasoline or diesel engine. Its energy is stored in rechargeable batteries which can be charged at home or at public charging stations.
Because an EV doesn’t use gasoline, there’s instantly a notion that it is somehow better than traditional vehicles. Especially with global warming and climate change always in the news, having the chance to help save the planet in whatever way possible can be enough to drive one to seriously consider opting for an EV instead of a gas-powered car. The question is, are EV’s really a step towards a better direction or not? Read on to find out.
Advantages of EVs
Cheaper to Operate – Electric cars are powered by electricity. Electricity is cheaper than other sources of fuel. Therefore, driving an EV is cheaper than driving a conventional car. There’s also that matter of not having to be stressed and affected every time there’s a fuel price hike. So you can just drive past all those gasoline stations without constantly having to keep your eye on fuel prices. To keep your car always ready for your day ahead, just plug it in during the evening and it will be charged and ready to go the next morning.
Easier to Maintain – With fewer moving parts, there are fewer parts to take care of, fewer functions to attend to, and less chance of parts wearing out, breaking down, or needing replacement. Fewer mechanical parts mean less maintenance efforts, and less maintenance expenses, of course.
Smoother and More Pleasant Driving Experience – Without an engine and gas-powered motors, an electric car runs smoothly and quietly. No revving sounds and sudden power bursts. Electric power is instantaneous, and an electric-powered car has continuous torque. When you step on the pedal, acceleration is immediate.
Friendly to the Environment – No fuel and no exhaust pipe means no emission of carbon and other toxic air pollutants, which makes electric cars kind to both humans and the environment.
Longer Warranty – Compared with gas-powered cars, electric cars come with a longer warranty period. Powertrain, for example, comes with a warranty of eight years or an equivalent of eighty thousand miles.
Tax Credits – Currently the Federal Government and State Governments are offering rebates for those who choose to drive a “clean car”. If you’re in the market for a vehicle, and an EV is a good fit for you, then you can offset the costs by taking advantage of the tax credits.
Disadvantages of EVs
Higher Acquisition Cost – An electric car will typically cost thousands of dollars more than a conventional gas-powered car. Even if the cost can be reduced through government incentives and tax benefits, the purchase price is still significantly higher.
Limited Choices – Electric cars may be the future of vehicles. Sadly, it doesn’t feel that way yet and at this time, there are only so many brands and models you can choose from.
Limited Mileage – A fully charged electric car can cover a range of approximately 70 to 100 miles. Unless your daily or usual travel falls within or below that range, then an EV may not be a good fit for you.
Additional Investment Needed – If you want the convenience of charging your car at home, you’ll have to shell out additional funds to set up your own charging station. Otherwise, you will have to deal with the current situation that charging stations are not as numerous and as accessible as gas stations yet. Besides, you may not always have the time to wait until your car gets fully recharged, which can take up to several hours (estimated time is 1 hour per 25 miles).
Depending on your unique situation, an electric car may or may not be what you need. Only you can decide whether the advantages of owning one are enough to compensate for the disadvantages that come with it.
