Why Leaders Get Heard
Tip: Stop Talking!
John Maxwell tells us that leadership is influence. There’s really nothing more to it; leaders are those who are able to influence others to get on board with their ideas. The leader has the vision, and he or she influences others to adopt the same vision. The trick, however, is how do you become influential? In order to influence others, you have to be heard.
In a world where more of one thing usually leads to more of another, we can sometimes end up with the wrong idea of how to be heard. If you want more sports skills, you spend more time practicing. If you want more money, you spend more time working. If you want a [more] clean house, you spend more time cleaning. But if you want to be heard more, spending more time talking doesn’t work out.
The Truth about Getting Heard
We all know the types that want to be heard, but go about it in completely the wrong way. They have great ideas, they aren’t stupid by any means, but they can’t seem to shut up. You try to ask a question or offer advice, and before you get a full sentence out they have interrupted to talk more about their opinions and ideas. All that talk means that people tune them out and stop listening.
If you recognize that you’re talking way too much and nobody is listening, then pay attention and put these ideas into practice.
The Three Steps to Being Heard
Keep it Short – Too often, people who want to be heard think they need to give ALL the details all at once. But really, the key is to not talk so much. Be outgoing, be charismatic, and be willing to meet new people. But keep your talk short enough that you can share and provide context.
Ask More Questions – Even if you have this awesome business plan that everyone needs to know about, you will be heard far better by asking questions. Get to know the person, discover who they are, and customize your message around what resonates with them.
Listen Carefully – There’s a good chance that people you meet can help you on your journey. When you don’t stop talking, you don’t get to know about them and the connections they can help make for you, or if you can help them too. Listen more than you speak, in order to be heard by more people.
