When is the Safest Time to Drive?
When is the Most Dangerous Time to Drive?
Getting behind the wheel takes a certain amount of risk. Today’s vehicles are far safer than they ever have been in the past, and the chances of being seriously injured in an accident are actually quite low. But there is always that chance that you could be involved in a wreck!
So, when it’s time to get out and drive… when should you do it? We reviewed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) report, and have discovered that you’re the safest on the road on Tuesday. Ok, there’s a little more to it than that.
What Time of Year are the Most Dangerous Times to Drive?
If you were asked when the most dangerous time of year to drive, you would probably say in the middle of winter. Roads are often slick, visibility reduced, you’re bundled up and shivering… so it makes sense. But really, the most dangerous time of year to drive is in the summer months, especially around the holidays.
Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Independence Day are the worst for fatal accidents in the US. The reason is pretty simple actually: there are many more people on the roads during that time. More people driving means that there are more chances of hitting one of them. Things get especially bad after midnight when people have over-indulged and they’re heading home.
When is the Safest Time of Day to Drive?
That late-night driving brings us to the next point. When should you drive if you want to be the safest possible? The answer is that the morning is the safest. With one caveat.
Drive before the morning commute starts. “Rush hour” is from 8AM to 6PM (with the heaviest traffic at the beginning and the end of that time period). If you’re able to adjust your schedule so that you’re not driving during those hours, you will be able to be safer on the road. Plan your day to get to work at 7:30 and you can avoid a large number of potential accidents.
When Is the Most Dangerous Time of Day to Drive?
If morning is the safest time to drive, it makes sense that late at night is the most dangerous time to drive. In actuality, the safety gauge ticks down starting in the early afternoon. Evening and on into the night are the most dangerous times to be behind the wheel.
Starting in the evening you have people driving home tired from a long day at work. They’re focused on that meeting that went wrong, or the labor they had to do. They aren’t paying attention. Combine that with people finishing happy hour, or having a drink with a dinner out, and with the fact that more people are on the road, and it gets dangerous.
But the leading cause of deaths on the road is due to impaired driving. That usually happens at night. If you don’t have to drive between midnight and 4am, don’t!
How You can be Safe Behind the Wheel
Being safe behind the wheel isn’t that hard to do. The problem is that we get complacent, and sort of turn to auto pilot. We check a quick text, daydream, and let our attention lapse. If we play the “what if” game, we can eliminate those issues.
