What is an Insurance Preferred Provider Shop?
Understanding Collision Repair at a Direct Repair Provider Shop
When you get in a wreck, you have the right to choose which auto body repair shop you take your vehicle to. This law protects you against unscrupulous insurance company dealings, and lets you choose who gets to work on your vehicle.
However, there are preferred provider shops that insurance companies choose to deal with. With a direct repair provider (DRP) relationship, the insurance company has teamed up with the shop to help streamline the process. There are a few things that you should be aware of when talking with your insurance company about their preferred collision repair shops.
“Steering” is a Tactic Used by Many Insurance Companies Use
Steering is illegal. An insurance company is not allowed to say that your repairs won’t be done unless you used a preferred shop. There are, however, many gray areas of language they may use in order to persuade you to use their DRP.
“That Shop isn’t One of Our Preferred Providers”
You have the right to choose a shop that isn’t on your insurance company’s DRP list. They can make mention of the fact that the shop you choose isn’t on the list, but don’t worry about that. You can still have Big Sky Collision Center do the work on your vehicle no matter what insurance company you use.
“We Can’t Warranty Their Work”
Big Sky Collision Center is built on a foundation of uncompromising integrity. That means make sure all of our repairs are done with precision and extra care is taken to avoid mistakes that would necessitate coming back in. But we do know that sometimes mistakes happen, and if something isn’t repaired, we offer a full warranty for as long as you own the vehicle. No need for an insurance company warranty when we provide it ourselves.
“Charges at that Shop are Higher than Others”
The costs for repairs vary widely depending on the shop, how busy they are, what certifications they have, where they’re located, and the quality of materials that they use. We ensure that all vehicles are repaired to factory safety standards with the ultimate goal of fixing your vehicle.
“Your Claim Will Take Longer to Settle with Them”
This could be true depending on how the back-and-forth goes with the insurance company. The bottom line is that you want to make sure you have your vehicle repaired, the right way, and safely back to you. The complexity of the claim and repairs determine how long it takes to have them completed.
Benefits of Using the Insurance Company’s DRP
This isn’t to say that you can’t, or shouldn’t use the insurance company’s preferred shop. In fact, Big Sky Collision Center has chosen to partner with a few insurance companies to help streamline the repair process. This partnership means that the insurance company doesn’t have to send out a claims adjuster; they take our word for it. This can hasten the paperwork process, and ultimately let you get your vehicle back sooner.
Regardless of your insurance company, though, we repair the vehicle as per the original manufacturer guidelines so that you know you get a safe vehicle that’s going to last for many more years.
