Wash Your Car, Even if it will Rain
Washing Makes Your Car Last Longer
Here’s the situation. Your car is dirty and you need to wash it. But you look at the forecast and it’s suppose to be sunny today, but rainy tomorrow. Then a day of sunshine, and another day of rain. Repeat for the foreseeable future. You can wash your vehicle now, but then give it 24 hours and the rain will mess up all the work you just put into it.
The question becomes, “Is it worthwhile to wash your vehicle now, or wait until the rain passes?” The answer is that it depends on where you live, when it last rained, what the road conditions are like, and some other factors. The bottom line, however, is that if you have the time, it’s always a good idea to wash your vehicle.
Not Much Rain Lately
Here in Billings, we go through dry spells. Especially later in the summer. It’s to be expected, we live in a semi-arid environment. The problems occur, however, when pollutants build up in the atmosphere without the rain to push them down to the earth where they can be filtered by soil and plants.
Suppose it hasn’t rained for quite a while, and you’re wondering if you should wash your car before the rains come. The answer is YES! And you should wax it too. The wash and wax will allow your vehicle to shed the water off so it does as little damage to the paint as possible. While rain by itself won’t hurt your paint job, rain mixed with city pollution can have a detrimental effect.
If it hasn’t rained for a while, then wash your car before it rains.
A Lot of Road Dirt
After the winter in Billings, there is a lot junk on the road. We’re not talking about debris, branches, pieces of vehicles, or other garbage though. We’re talking about dirt, grime, oil, tire grime, and brake dust. It doesn’t get washed away like it does when the weather is warmer.
That road dirt ends up on your vehicle. And it’s not good for it, especially the heavy abrasives like the brake dust. You want your vehicle to repel the debris, and you want to protect it as much as possible. A wash and wax before the rain, and a light rinse after is optimal.
If there’s a lot of grime on the road, then wash your car before it rains.
A Little Rain Coming
Billings is an interesting place when it comes to rain. On the one hand, we recently had rain storms come through that dumped a ton of moisture. But when the weather is a little warmer, the rain will come through drop some droplets, and then move on. It will be sunny, then stormy, then sunny again all in a matter of 20 minutes!
The problem is that when these small storms come through, all they do is knock the dust out of the air. That dust then clings to your car and your car ends up dirtier than before the rain fell!
If it has rained recently, and the rainfall is a small amount, wait until after the rain to wash your vehicle.
A Clean Car is a Safe Car
Most of what it boils down to is whether or not you have the time to wash your vehicle. If you can do it before, and after, the rain, then go right ahead! A clean car is a safe car, and when you can keep it even cleaner with an extra wash, then by all means, wash your car before it rains.
