Turn your Fear into Courage
Transform your Life by Understanding Fear
Nelson Mandela once said, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” Wise words spoken by a man who overcame a lot of difficulty in his life.
It’s one thing to understand fear and how a courageous person continues to press forward despite the fear. But it’s an entirely different thing to know how to act to use that fear and to act courageously. It takes a re-shaping of your mindset to get there.
Understand the Fear
Most fears are irrational. Take the widespread fear of spiders for an example. The majority are harmless, almost none are aggressive, yet people loathe these little creatures. Of course, when we’re talking about fears, we often aren’t talking about spiders.
Understand your fear by weight out the costs and benefits. If your fear is making mistakes so you don’t take risks, look at all the benefits that you’re missing out on because you’re not taking those risks. Could you fail? Of course, but failure is nothing more than an opportunity to learn.
Commit to Learning
There’s a saying that says, “Winners lose more than losers lose.” The idea is that you don’t get to the top by not taking risks. There is always the possibility that you’ll lose, but when you calculate the risk, the result is a great reward.
But what happens when you do lose? What do you do when you fail? You have to take a step back and understand that failure isn’t permanent; it’s not a defining moment. Instead, it’s an experience that can teach you valuable lessons.
Change Your Attitude
Fears are real. Your attitude toward them is what defines you. Will you act in cowardice or with courage? Now keep in mind that there are foolish actions and rational actions too. When you weigh the situation, calculate the risks, and act accordingly, you act rationally courageous.
Practice small. Take something that frightens you, but not your biggest fear, and calculate the costs. Then act accordingly so that you can be courageous in the face of fear. This will require putting yourself out there, but you won’t grow without exerting your own self.
