Three Road Trips You Must Take this Summer
Summer is Road Trip Time: Here are Easy Ones with the Family
The winter was long. The roads were snowy. Most of us didn’t go anywhere. But now that things have cleared up a bit, the summer is looking much more promising. Sure it’s still cold(ish), and the rain has been a bit heavier this year than usual. But that won’t last long. Soon spring will come out in full force, the sun will shine, and the days will warm in to the 70’s and 80’s.
When summer hits, millions of Americans around the country will hit the highway. They will set off on the proverbial road trip. While some will travel across the country, we here in Montana don’t have to go that far. Instead, let’s stay close by and see the sights that we probably have not yet seen. As the best auto body repair shop in Billings, we have narrowed it down to 3 great places that you can spend some time with the family this summer.
Yellowstone National Park
Leaving from Billings, it will take you about 3 (scenic) hours to get to the gates of Yellowstone National Park. No matter which route you take (aside from going through Jackson), you can get there and see a lot of the park in just a day. But we recommend at least 2 for full viewing pleasure.
Many people like to make it a big loop. Head through Bozeman, and down to West Yellowstone to enter. You can hit up Old Faithful on your first day, and if you have reserved a hotel or camp site in the park, you can settle in for the night (without reservations you will have to head back to West Yellowstone). Cruise through the rest of the park visiting Yellowstone Lake, Norris Geysers, Lamar Valley, and eventually end up leaving the park near Cooke City. You’ll head down the Beartooth Highway and back to Billings.
Top of the World
As long as you’re travelling that way, why not stop for a snack at the top of the world? About 30 miles from the entrance to Yellowstone, as you drive along at 9,400 feet above sea level you get to pass an old log cabin store. Actually, they call it the Top of the World Resort because there’s more than just a convenience store.
But don’t expect hot springs, luxurious rooms, and day spas. Instead, expect fishing, and good old country hospitality. Most of us will just swing in for a snack and to get a picture with the sign. If you live in Billings, and you haven’t been to the top of the world, it’s time you went!
Lewis & Clark Caverns
Most of us know about Lewis and Clark. The adventuring duo set out from St. Louis on May 14, 1803. For the next year and a half they made their way across uncharted territories in the still young American West. Finally, in November 1805 they arrived at the Pacific Ocean. They dipped their toes in, and spend a year trekking all the way back to St. Louis.
Along the way they documented wildlife, areas, geography, geology, and Native American life. They are considered to be one of the most essential influences on how we were able to settle the West. They carved their names in Pompey’s Pillar, and even camped within sight of the caverns a little west of Bozeman.
Lewis and Clark Caverns, however, weren’t explored by non-natives until well after the expedition. It wasn’t until the year 1900 when tours were started. Today, there are guided tours that lead you through underground passageways and allow you to view spectacular formations that have grown from calcium deposits over many years. A word of warning, there are some tight squeezes and the tours do require a bit of physical exertion. If your health or body type isn’t up for it, then it’s better to skip this one.
