This is How We Grow
Growth Doesn’t Come on Accident
Ask around and you likely won’t find a single person that says they don’t want to grow. We all have goals, and the only way to accomplish them is to grow ourselves so that one day we can reach those goals. An athlete has the goal of growing his or her abilities, the entrepreneur has the goal of growing his or her business, and the parent has the goal of growing his or her abilities to better raise a child.
What most people don’t see is that growth doesn’t just happen. In order to grow there has to be a conscious effort, a sacrifice, and a lesson learned. Most often we grow toward that which we desire, so we don’t notice the sacrifice as much. But sometimes we get caught in the doldrums of life, and we have to make a conscious decision to sacrifice something in order to grow.
This is how we grow.
Give Up to Go Up
The most succinct and eloquent way of putting it is 5 simple words from John Maxwell. We must give up in order to go up. Here’s what that means.
If we want to go up, if we want to grow, we must give up something or someone that is holding us back.
Let’s suppose you want to improve your health, but the “guys” get together every Friday night to drink beer and eat chicken wings. You could try to tag along and have a salad and water, but that’s likely not going to work out in the long term. It’s a hard decision to make, but in order to go up on the healthy scale, you may have to give up those nights.
Maybe you are interested in starting your own company. But you know that money will be tight when you do, at least for a while as things get rolling. You might have to give up cable, your smartphone, a vacation, and eating out in order to go up to the top of your industry. Those things are holding you back now, and have to be let go.
When you’re giving up, it’s going to be hard. But growth doesn’t come when things are easy. In fact, we turn to John Maxwell again for a little tidbit of wisdom when he tells us that:
“If we are growing, we are always going to be outside our comfort zone”
One doesn’t become a star athlete by doing what’s comfortable; instead it’s hours and hours of training and practice.
One doesn’t lose weight by sitting on the couch comfortably; instead it’s dedication to a diet and working out in the gym.
One doesn’t become a millionaire by spending lavishly and skipping work; instead it’s commitment to a plan that will result in a higher net worth.
One doesn’t [input your goals or dreams here] by being comfortable; instead it’s hard work, dedication, getting outside your comfort zone in order to accomplish your wildest dreams.
