When You Have to Stand Out from the Rest
Have you ever wondered the difference between those who seem to excel without trying, and those who are solidly in the middle? From the outside it looks like they just happen to be in the right place at the right time. Everything just goes their way… right?
Actually, there is a ton of work that goes into what they do behind the scenes. We only see the outcome, but we don’t see the hours, days, and years of dedication, practice, and habits that lead them to become who they are.
Some call it the 1% difference.
What Makes the 1% Difference?
No, we’re not talking about the upper crust, the 1% that owns the majority of the wealth. But if you want to get there, then this is definitely one of the habits that you want to get into. What we are talking about, is doing just 1% more.
Let’s suppose you’re in sales, and you make 100 phone calls each week. If you did just 1% more, at the end of the year you’d have 52 extra phone calls made. That’s like gaining half a week on your peers.
What if you have to manufacture 10 widgets every day, but you do 1% more. After a year of work days, you have made 2,860 widgets, when your peers have done 2,600. Who will be looked at first for the promotion?
If you invest $100 per year for 30 years, your money will grow to $12,527 (assuming 8% rate of return). If you invest 1% more, it grows to $12,652. That’s $125 more, but you only increased your contribution by $30. Take it further and improve your rate of return to 9% and that $100 yearly contribution grows to $15,419. 1% means $3,000 more!
The opposite holds true as well. If you’re walking in a straight line from Seattle to New York City, you will walk 2,405 miles. If your course is off by 1%, you will be 42 miles off your destination at the end of the 2,405 mile journey.
What About a 3% Difference?
If 1% matters so much, what about 3%? How much further ahead of your peers could you be, by doing just 3% more?
Suppose every 100 phone calls means you get 10 sales which earn you $1,000. You have to make 100 calls each week to make a $52,000 per year income. But you bump it to 103 calls per week. Over the course of a year, you make a total of 5,356 calls (156 over your normal), and increase your income $1,500. How much extra work is 3 extra calls?
If you’re walking from Seattle to New York, and your course is off by 3%, you end up over 120 miles away from where you intended.
Commit to Doing 1% More
Doing 1% more isn’t hard to do. It’s not so much work that you will wear out quickly. In fact, you likely won’t even notice the extra work every single day (a typical workday is 480 minutes; 1% more is 484.8 minutes, not even five minutes longer each day). But over time, it adds up. Over time, you end up light years ahead of your peers.
