Suctioning Out Dents in Your Vehicle
Some Dents can Be Suctioned Out
Living in Montana, we get dings and dents in our vehicles. Other cars on the road create hazards, icy roadways cause us to slip off, and hail storms can dent up a car. It’s part of life that your new car will likely end up with some dents in it within a year.
Some dents require more aggressive removal. But one method of paintless dent repair (or PDR) is with the use of specialized suction cups. These suction cups can pull the dent back into place, and your car can look as good as new with minimal time spent in the shop.
How the Suction Method Works
We all know how a suction cup works. You place it against the window and you can hang items from it. This method is nearly the same. Using a special suction tool the small and medium dents can be popped back into place. Your vehicle is fixed without having to remove the whole panel from the vehicle, it’s fast, and it’s efficient. Our trained auto body specialists know how to get the work done without causing damage to your vehicle or paint.
Dents that Can’t be Suctioned
The suction method works great on small and some medium sized dents. However, there are times when we won’t use this method.
Large dents – bigger dents run the risk of having more damage behind the panel that we can’t see without removing it first.
Paint damage – cracks, chips, or other breaks in the paint need to be addressed; not just the dent.
Location – Much of the metal on a vehicle is a skin that covers empty space. However, there are areas that are backed by foam or electrical components. If there’s something behind it, we have to replace it.
Other Methods of Dent Removal
The suction method for dent removal is great, but it’s not the only way to get rid of a dent. Some dents can be pounded out from the back. Others can be pulled out with wire and the surface of the car welded and repainted. And still other dents, when there are a lot of them, the most efficient way is to remove the whole panel and replace it.
Don’t Try this at Home
Most of the time we suggest that you do the work to keep your vehicle in top shape. For instance, cleaning your vehicle regularly, and then bringing it to us a couple of times each year for a complete auto detailing. Dent removal is one of those things that it’s better if we handle it.
Trying it on your own could cause damage to the structure (or you may not notice the damage to the structure). You could also chip the paint and set yourself up for rust and other problems down the road. Finally, it’s possible to overcorrect the problem; you end up with a bubble instead of a dent.
