Some of the Most Common Auto Body Repairs
We See a Lot of the Same Repairs
When you think of auto body repair, or collision repair, you probably think of being in a big wreck. Afterward you take in your vehicle, all smashed and mangled, and magically a few days (or a week or two) it is transformed to looking like new. Here at Big Sky Collision Center we do some of those big jobs, but a lot of our work is the smaller issues.
We have put together a list of the most common auto body repairs that we see come through our shop here in Billings. We work on them every single day, and the technicians working on your vehicle have honed their skills so that you get expert work done every time.
Paintless Dent Repair
Paintless Dent Repair, often abbreviated PDR, makes the top of the list because we’re getting into hail season. Nearly every year there is a major hail storm that rips through Billings causing a lot of damage to homes and vehicles. With the really big storms, we can’t do PDR; we have to replace entire panels.
PDR, however, is a faster and more affordable method of getting the dings out of your vehicle. And not all of them are caused by hail. Shopping carts, some door dings, and anything else that can put a small dent in your vehicle can often be fixed without messing with the paint.
Paint Chips and Scratches
We live in Montana. That means we have road debris, rocks, and there’s a good chance that you have driven on a dirt or gravel road in the last few weeks. Not to mention careless people that brush against your vehicle putting a nice long scratch on the side of it.
Chips and scratches aren’t going to immediately put you in jeopardy. But if they are deep enough, the water can make its way through the paint and onto the steel surface. Water plus steel means rust. Fixing up those chips and scratches means that your car lasts longer.
Dents and Dings
These aren’t the dents that you get from hail. These are dents that are a bit deeper and can’t be done with PDR. Sometimes a hole needs drilled so tools can be inserted and the dent popped out. Sometimes a bumper needs replaced because it’s all dinged up.
Dents and dings are common. When PDR can’t fix them, we have highly skilled ding removers that can pop them out and make the vehicle so it looks like it was never there.
Too often people are in collisions, and they believe the damage is just on the surface. But nearly all collisions will have damage that you can’t see without sophisticated tools and computers.
When you have been in an accident, if you were traveling more than a few miles per hour, then you likely incurred some frame damage. That frame needs to be straightened in order to ensure the vehicle operates properly.
Honorable Mention: Auto Painting
This one comes as an honorable mention, because not too many people come in solely to have their vehicle painted (with the exception of chip and scratch repair). But having your vehicle painted is a part of many of the repairs done here in the shop. After the body work is finished, it’s painted to get you back on the road with a glistening and new-looking vehicle.
