Replacing a Windshield after Hail Damage
When Does a Hail Damaged Windshield Need Replaced?
After a hail storm comes through Billings, we see a lot of cars with some pretty severe damage. Hoods and roofs generally take the brunt of the damage; which is good. It’s pretty easy to replace a hood (and if there are more than a few dents it’s usually cheaper to simply swap the part) and other flat panels. But if the hail is strong enough to dent a hood, it is likely strong enough to chip, crack, or shatter a windshield. Should you always have a hail damaged windshield replaced? Or is it sometimes enough to repair the cracks?
Minor Windshield Damage
Suppose your vehicle is pummeled by hail. You have a few dents, but the windshield looks like it is in good shape. Bring it to Big Sky Collision Center, your hail damage repair experts in Billings, for an inspection. Often there is damage that has occurred that isn’t visible to the eye. Seals might be broken, and the while the windshield isn’t going to fall out, it could let water inside.
If there are just a couple of tiny cracks, and an inspection has shown that the seal around the windshield is still true, then you can opt for rock chip repair (or in this case, hail chip repair) in order to speed up the process.
Multiple Chips and Cracks on the Windshield
While driving, your windshield is what protects you from road debris, stones and pebbles, rain, and high pressure wind. If your windshield isn’t structurally sound, then you are subjecting yourself to a dangerous situation.
A damaged windshield is a weakened windshield. You wouldn’t drive with a tire that was low on air saying, “It’s just a little low.”
You wouldn’t drive with a door that didn’t latch saying, “It mostly latches.”
You wouldn’t drive if your vehicle was making a thumping noise from the engine saying, “It’s just a little thumping noise.”
So why drive with a broken windshield saying, “It’s just a little broken”?
For your safety, and the safety of your occupants, we recommend replacing the windshield right away if the damage is severe enough to impede your vision. A small crack may not be a big deal right now, but it’s going to spread and grow.
Remember that Quality Matters
After suffering hail damage on your vehicle, you want the best repairs possible. While visibly there may not be much of a difference between an OEM and an aftermarket windshield, structurally there is a big difference. Your safety is important, don’t settle for less than the best (read more about how not all windshields are created equal).
