Repainting Your Vehicle with Technology
Paint Matching Technology Offers a Better Paintjob
How many shades of green are there? If you try to research you will get wildly different answers. The truth is: there are essentially unlimited shades (or tones, or hues, or whatever you want to call them). The reason is that a tiny adjustment, maybe not even visible to the human eye, results in a whole new color. With so many different shades, you may wonder how painting, and repainting, a vehicle can get a close match.
First, the science; then, the art. Here’s what you need to know about having your vehicle painted.
The Science of Auto Body Paint
Vehicle manufacturers have their own specific tint. These tints are sent off to the paint manufacturer, and the company making the rig chooses (usually the lowest bid) who to go with. That same tint of paint is widely available to auto body shops, and those who want to try to touch up the paint on their own. Sounds pretty straightforward… but it’s not.
Not all vehicles are painted in the same place. Or the same day. Or in the same weather. So a Toyota Camry painted on one day, might be slightly different color than one painted the next. One painted in a Mexican manufacturing plant will be slightly different than one in a more northern climate. The point is: color isn’t always color.
The Art of Auto Body Paint
If your vehicle was damaged, some of it will need to be repainted. But it would be prohibitively expensive to paint the entire vehicle when just the hood and fenders need painted. The paint technician, however, can’t just plug in the formula and call it good, because here in Billings our climate is going to be different than where the vehicle was made. This means there are “alternate” colors needed.
In order to perfectly match the color on your vehicle, up to a dozen test cards may need sprayed. When these are dry, they are carefully compared to the actual color of the rig, and the best match is chosen. Then, using more of their artistic skills, the paint tech will carefully blend the new color into the old.
Here at Big Sky Collision, our painters are really good. Having perfected their skills, they can seamlessly blend that paint so you can’t even tell where the new paint ends and the old begins.
