Prep Your Car for Spring
Welcome Spring with a Safe, Clean Vehicle
Currently it is cold and snowy outside. But the weather will soon warm up, and in the next month or so all of the snow is going to melt away. We’ll be left with warm days that are bright and sunny, flowers bursting from the ground, leaves budding on the trees, and a vehicle that is… well it’s up to you how you want your vehicle to look, feel, and drive come spring.
Here at Big Sky Collision Center, we want every vehicle on the road to be a safe vehicle. We want you to have fun while driving, and to not need our services. But we know that things happen. And when they do, come to the best auto body repair shop in Billings.
Here are a few pointers on how you can get your car, truck, or SUV prepped for spring so that you have the safest and nicest vehicle possible.
Change Your Fluids
This winter was especially cold. That means your car was spending more time warming fluids only to have them cool down right away. Just think of how slow things are flowing when they are -15 degrees! This can cause them to break down faster than usual, so it is recommended that every spring you at least change your oil (and other fluids too if possible).
Align Your Wheels
Snow and ice on the road means that you’re car is bouncing all over the place. Potholes have formed, and you’re bumping into more curbs, gutters, and bumpers than usual. All of these little jostles can throw your alignment way off. The result is that your wheels aren’t perfectly straight, and your tires are going to wear unevenly. For about $75 you can get everything aligned and save yourself a big headache later (or possibly avoid a crash).
While you’re at it, make sure you don’t need new tires. Worn tires in the winter will cause you to slip and slide around, but as they get hot in the summer they can fail.
Check Your Brakes
Since you have your vehicle in for an alignment, ask them to check your brake pads. The wheels are off and most shops will do this for free. A quick measurement can give you the information to know if your brakes need to be changed now, or if you can wait until later in the year.
If you do put this off, and you start hearing a scratching or squealing noise (it sounds like metal grating on metal) then it’s time. No more putting it off, they need replaced right away.
Test Your Battery
Take your car or truck to any shop or place that sells batteries, and you can have it tested for free. They have a little device that will measure how much power you have left, and estimate how long until your battery is gone completely. Over the winter you’ve put a lot of strain on that battery, cranking your vehicle to a start in sub-zero temps, make sure to keep it running through the summer.
Swap your Wipers
Windshield wipers are pretty cheap. But many people wait until their current set is absolutely destroyed before putting on new ones. Don’t wait, instead swap your wipers twice each year. Put a new set on to clean off the rain in the spring and summer, and then another set that will clear away snow and ice in the winter. After a long winter you’ve probably put rips and tears in your wipers, so get rid of them!
Detail Your Vehicle
Before the major changes in seasons, it’s time to get your car detailed! After the winter this is especially important. While we don’t use a lot of salt on the roads here in Billings, there is some. That salt is highly corrosive to any exposed metal. Just look at vehicles from the Midwest and you can see how much damage salt can do. After the snow melts, bring your vehicle in for a full auto detail. A clean car is a safe car, and it will last longer too.
