Plastic Repairs at the Body Shop
New Plastics can be Repaired
Often when we think of collisions, we think of crunching metal and breaking glass. But modern vehicles have a significant amount of plastic on them. While the main part of the body is metal, and obviously the frame has to be made of metal, there are many aspects that are plastic.
From bumpers, to panels, to light covers, and equipment housings, these plastic parts are durable, lightweight, and often get broken in a collision. In the past they simply had to be replaced. Today, the higher quality plastics can actually be repaired instead of replaced.
How Plastic Parts are Repaired
Let’s suppose you’re involved in a minor collision. It doesn’t do much, but your bumper is cracked. Upon inspection it turns out that nothing is damaged behind the bumper, and literally it’s just a crack. Previous repairs meant ordering a new part, and then painting it the right colors so that everything blended together. Depending on the vehicle, the damage, and a number of other factors, there are ways to actually repair the part now.
The cracked bumper can be fixed with some high tech patching methods. It’s sanded down, and a small area of the bumper is spot painted to match the rest. No need to remove the whole thing, then wait for an order, and waste a bunch of paint.
The result is that the repairs are done quicker, you get your vehicle back sooner, and the overall price is lower.
Of course, plastic repairs can’t be done on all vehicles. Some older vehicles don’t have the right kinds of plastic. Often a collision is too severe to allow repairs and a replacement is more affordable and quicker. And sometimes it just isn’t the right thing to do; it is sometimes better to replace than to repair.
