Leadership Begins with Great Communication
Four Steps to be a Better Communicator
Communication. The name alone implies it’s more than just speaking. It’s more than just hearing as well. Communication is a two-way street that requires both parties to have some sort of vested interest. As we strive to be the best collision repair shop in Billings, we want to make sure that you’re the best human you can possibly be. We have put together a simple (not to be confused with easy), 4 step process to improving communication.
Great Communications Begins with Commitment
Have you ever tried to lecture a child that doesn’t want to listen? There’s no commitment on their part, so the communication that you’re trying to emphasize falls flat! Commitment to a common goal is necessary in order for any communication to work. In a business setting, that’s having everyone on board with a common vision. In a home setting, it’s having everyone on board to a peaceful household.
Great Communication Allows for Documentation
Several years ago, a friend was hit going through a round-about on his motorcycle. Thankfully there were no injuries. Unfortunately, his bike was destroyed and there was no documentation as to what happened. The driver of the truck said the motorcycle came into his lane; the motorcycle driver said the truck came into his. The lack of documentation stalled any communication that could happen in court. Documentation, whether it’s note taking during meetings, video, companywide memos, emails, or notes on the refrigerator asking your spouse to pick up milk on the way home means there is less likely to be a breakdown in communication along the way.
Great Communication Thrives on Interaction
Have you ever been on the receiving end of a lecture? It’s all about them telling you what’s what. Any feedback is seen as back talk and not appreciated. When one party does all the talking, communication doesn’t work and eventually something has to give. We see it in countries with dictatorships, companies that crumble, and families with rebellious children. Interaction between all parties means that the final decision is more likely to be appreciated due to the clarity surrounding the issue.
Great Communication Emphasizes Clarity
If you’re in a leadership position, you have the final say. Even though some, or many, won’t like the outcome, if the other steps have been done properly, then the reason for the decision will become clear. Clarity means that even though it wasn’t their first choice, they are still on board to work toward the common goal. Clarity also means better efficiency when working toward that goal. You can train a firefighter to be the best of the best, but give him an unclear address of where the fire is, and he won’t perform.
