Keep One Eye on the Goal
Hit Your Target More Often
One of the biggest mistakes that people can make, no matter what they are trying to accomplish, is taking their eyes off the target. Removing your eyes from the goal only serves to set yourself up for failure.
However, with life there are a lot of little things that you have to pay attention to. There are details that need attended, and if you have both eyes on the goal, you miss the details that can derail the entire plan. The solution? To keep one eye on the goal.
Honing Your Vision
Here at Big Sky Collision Center, we are all about training leaders. As a company we have a vision, and each of our employees is trained in leadership so that he or she can help to achieve that vision. They make it their own, and ultimately you (the customer) reaps the rewards.
All too often there are businesses out there that just kind of wing it. They have no vision, and while in the startup stages it’s ok to have that in the works. But as a developed company, a vision is imperative. Think of it like a firefighter.
The firefighter knows what he needs to do. Put his gear on, get the truck ready, set up the ladder, get into the burning building, rescue the victims, and put out the fire. That is his mission. His vision, however, is something different. Imagine a firefighter without a vision; he goes through all of the steps only to realize that his ladder has been set up on the wrong building!
Taking an eye off the goal is like doing just that.
Hitting the Target Every Time
Whether your goal, or target, is to have a great vacation, or to build a successful company, or to be influential in your neighborhood, you have to keep one eye on the goal. All of the details, how you do it (your mission), are important. But they are meaningless if working toward the wrong goal (or vision).
Now talking in metaphors is easy to do. How do you apply it to your life? How do you keep an eye on the goal?
Every morning, remind yourself of your vision. Remind yourself where you want to be.
Before every task, remind yourself of your vision. Ask yourself, “Will this get me closer?”
At the end of each day, remind yourself of your vision. Ask yourself, “Did I work toward my goal today?”
Create a vision board. A visual reminder will do more than thinking about your goals. Write things down, add pictures, strive for perfection, and work toward those goals with everything that you do.
Keeping your goal, your vision, your target, in the front of your mind at all times will help you to hit your target every time.
