It Is Possible
Dream Big Because It is Possible
1954 is a pivotal year in the world of sports. Those who follow the Olympics and have studied the history of the summer games know why. Those who run track may know why. It was this year that the impossible, suddenly became possible.
In 1954 Roger Bannister ran a mile in under 4 minutes. For all of history until this point it had been deemed that it was impossible for a human being to run a mile in less than 4 minutes. It was this year when that impossibility was no longer impossible. It was this year that set the precedent that people could run faster than 4 minute miles, and in the last 60+ years thousands of people have accomplished that. What happened that the impossible was suddenly possible?
We Set Our Own Barriers
You have probably heard the phrase, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right!” The idea here is that you set barriers for yourself. And whatever barrier you put up, you end up succumbing to it.
Think about it in your own life. Perhaps you have trouble sticking with a diet. How many times have you told yourself, “This will be hard.” And after you fail you say, “I just can’t keep on a diet.”? The reason you can’t stick with the diet is because you set yourself up for failure before you even start!
Perhaps you are interviewing for a new job. Before the interview you may go over a list of ways you’re not qualified for the position. By the time you sit down, you have subconsciously made the decision to not get hired. You have blocked yourself from your goal!
What other barriers have you put in front of yourself? They may look like:
- I can’t cook.
- I’m not smart enough.
- He’s better than me.
- She’s prettier than me.
- I wish I had a better job.
- I have no sense of style.
- I can’t… I’m not… he, she, they are…
Any time you put yourself as less than the best, you are setting yourself up for failure by installing your own barriers.
It is Possible
Do you want to do better? Do you want to succeed beyond your wildest dreams? Do you want to conquer the impossible? Then it’s time to remove those barriers!
We laugh at Saturday Night Live skits like Stuart Smalley (I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and gosh darn it people like me!). But there is truth to them! Those words actually work, and when we say that we are good enough, smart enough, and we can do it, it’s like a switch that goes off.
Suddenly, we can do the impossible because it’s no longer impossible. We can run a 4 minute mile when how many millions of people before us never could? Is it time in your life to make the commitment to saying, “It’s Possible” to everything that comes your way?
Eliminate the negative, in with the positive!
