How You can Lead by Inspiring Others
Becoming an Inspirational Leader
Big Sky Collision Center is much more than an auto body repair shop in Billings. Our goal is to encourage everyone that works here, and everyone in the community to invest in growing themselves in the art of leadership. These skills, which can transfer with you wherever you may go, are invaluable to your personal growth, and the growth of those around you.
As John Maxwell puts it, “Leadership is influence.” But we also know that it’s not just influencing others to perform their best, it’s also inspiring them to be their best. There are many little ways you can change your behavior to help encourage and inspire others, here are a few of those that you can begin to make habits.
What is Inspiration as it Pertains to Leadership
When we lead others, we help to influence them to achieve greatness. Influence is great, but when those being lead don’t understand the vision, there is no inspiration to perform and work toward that greatness.
Inspiring others will allow them to see beyond what is immediately in front of them, and to discover their hidden abilities.
Inspiring others will provide the motivation needed to keep moving forward.
Inspiring others will encourage them to “pay it forward” and they in turn will inspire others as well.
Leadership is not just influencing people to work toward greatness, it is inspiring them daily to keep up the good fight.
Traits of an Inspiring Leader
The problem with inspiration, however, is that it cannot come from just anyone. A great leader will be able to inspire because he or she has developed the following traits.
Inspiration comes from being a good listener. Being open, and allowing conversation to go both ways is an important part of listening.
Enthusiasm and energy is important. This isn’t just jubilance, it’s a passion for the vision that is often unseen.
Being real creates trust. People want to follow those that they connect with; not those that are seen as distant.
Be clear with goals. You know the vision, it must be instilled in others. There shouldn’t be a gray area about it.
Consider those in a leadership position. Do you respect what they say because of the words they say, or because of the traits they have developed?
Language and Habits of an Inspiring Leader
Inspiration comes in many ways. But as a leader, it’s your job to ensure that everyone else is inspired. One of the best ways to do that is to incorporate certain language into your everyday life. It’s language that builds confidence. Examples include:
- I really like the way you…
- You’re really good at…
- I love how much you have progressed in the last year.
- I see great potential in _____ area for you.
- Thanks for being awesome at…
Of course platitudes mean nothing if they’re not sincere. Always speak the truth, and seek out ways to encourage. Soon it will become a habit.
