How to Choose a Good Starter Vehicle
Finding the Right First Vehicle
Buying a new vehicle is a big step; it’s especially big if it is your first vehicle. But with all of the options out there, it can be overwhelming to figure out what the perfect first vehicle is. In order to avoid frustration and a financial pitfall, you have to choose a good starter vehicle.
Here at Big Sky Collision Center, our goal is to make sure that you’re an informed consumer. Hopefully your drives will all be safe and collision free; but if you do need collision repair, we strive to be the number one auto body shop in Billings.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when you’re shopping for the perfect starter vehicle.
Figure Out How Much You can Afford
Finding the right car is all based on what you can afford. It would be awesome to have the Corvette, but most of us have a Honda budget. The problem many car buyers get themselves into is that they don’t consider the entire costs of owning a vehicle; it goes far beyond just the loan amount.
While it’s best to avoid indebtedness and pay cash, sometimes you have to take out a loan. A quick calculation is to be prepared to spend $25 per month for every $1000 borrowed; so a $10,000 car will cost $250 per month. Sounds cheap, right?
Remember, you have to factor into your costs insurance, fuel, and regular maintenance. When all of those are taken into consideration, that $250 per month can easily rise to $500 per month. Consider all the costs so you can start your search.
Discover the Most Reliable Vehicles Around
Vehicle reliability varies from year to year and model to model. But there are a few manufacturers that consistently rank well for vehicles that don’t have major problems.
Toyota – Year after year Toyota gets high marks for being a long-lasting vehicle that will have relatively few mechanical issues.
Honda – Honda has made great vehicles for a long time. Consider an Accord or a Civic if fuel efficiency is a priority for you.
Hyundai – These often fly below the radar, but they are affordable and great vehicles.
Subaru – There’s a reason that everyone in Bozeman drives a Subaru. They perform great in the winter, and last for hundreds of thousands of miles.
There are many more great makes and models out there. Some manufacturers consistently make all of their vehicles with top-of-the-line quality, and others make a handful of models that perform better than others.
Search for the Safest Vehicle
Safety should be all of our priorities. Fortunately, many vehicles on the market today are superbly safe. While there are many that rank better than others, you should choose the safest possible on your list that meets your criteria (determined above). Here is some further reading to help make your choice:
Find the safest vehicle that is the most dependable, and you can have peace of mind when you’re driving around.
Consider How Long it will Hold its Value
Finally, there’s one more consideration. Some vehicles hold their value while others will depreciate quickly. If you’re searching for a used vehicle, and many of them seem to cost a lot higher than you would expect, that’s a good indication that you should look more into it to see if it’s a make and model that holds its value.
If you want to keep the vehicle for a long time, this is a good route to go. If you think you will only have it for a couple of years, it may not be quite as an important factor to consider.
