Great Leaders Set Great Goals
The Five Step Plan to Accomplishing Goals
Leadership is all about influencing others to achieve goals. These goals aren’t just your goals, but they are the goals for the entire organization. If you’re in a leadership position, have you taken the time to set goals? Have you reviewed them? Here at Big Sky Collision Center, we believe that in order to be the best auto body repair shop in Montana, we have to train everyone who works here as a leader.
Today we are going to go through the five step process to creating, and achieving your goals. This process can be used anywhere, with any goal, no matter if it’s at home, at work, or somewhere else.
Set the Goal
If you don’t have a goal and you say you, “just want to succeed”, you will probably fail. We need direction, we need guidance, and we need an end that we can keep in mind.
Make a big goal, one that will be difficult to achieve. Set that goal, and keep your eyes on the prize. Working hard without a goal is like the best fireman in the world responding to a call and setting up his ladder on the wrong building.
Plan the Goal
It’s at the second step where most people end up failing. They have a goal, they know where they want to be, and then they aimlessly try to get there. Even more important than the goal is to create a plan on how you will get to it.
Break the plan into actionable baby steps. Now you know exactly what must be done each and every day so that you can get to your goal.
Work toward the Goal
Now is the work. Fortunately, for most people, the work is the easy part. They know what to do, they know how to do it, and now they have a plan and a goal where they can systematically direct their efforts. Get to work!
Stick to the Work
But life isn’t a smooth line. It’s not as easy as just seeing the goal, making a plan, and then chipping away at it. We will have great days, and we will have terrible days. Those terrible days can throw off our mojo and make us want to quit.
In the words of Dory, from Finding Nemo, “Just keep swimming.” Power through the bad days, and use the energy from the good days to have even better days.
Achieve the Goal
You have the goal, you have the plan, you have the strong work ethic, you plow through the bad days, and before you know it, you have achieved your goal. Time to step back, admire your work, and set another big, seemingly unachievable goal. The process now starts over as you work hard to get to the next level.
