Don’t Get in a Wreck this Spring
Tips to Avoid Crashing Your Car
If you have ever been in a car wreck, you know the feeling. The sinking stomach as you lose control, the screeching tires and crunching of metal. The jolt that whips through your body as the car comes to a stop much faster than it ever should. Hopefully you got out with little more than some scratches, bruises, and a bit irritated at yourself. If you don’t want to experience that (or experience it again), then we have some tips that will help you stay safe!
Big Sky Collision Center is determined to remain the best collision repair center in Billings. To do that, we want you to be safe so that you never actually need our services! Spring is upon us, so here are ways you can stay safe on the road.
Replace Your Windshield Wipers
A set of windshield wipers will cost you between $10 and $30 (depends on what size you need and how fancy you want to get). Generally the cheapest of the cheap don’t work that well, but the fanciest around aren’t all that much better than the mid-grade ones.
The important thing is that your current wipers have gone through a lot this winter. As they scrape over your not yet fully defrosted window, the ice particles put little tears in them. The result is that when you try to wipe away the rain water, you’re left with streaks that impair your ability to see clearly through the windshield.
Is your safety, and your family’s safety, worth $10-$30 every 6 months? That’s only a couple bucks a day to avoid an accident.
Check Your Tires
Tires are usually neglected until they’re so bad that you’re slippy sliding all over the place. Often, that happens in the winter when the first snow coats the road. But bad tires on water can be just as dangerous!
As we enter the rainy season, we’re going to have more water on the road. If the tread on your tires isn’t deep enough to push the water out and away, you will end up hydroplaning or sliding on the wet asphalt.
Swing by any tire shop and they will measure your tread depth for you. A new tire will have about 11/32 inch of tread (trucks and specialty tires may have more). But over time that will wear out. If your tires are at 4/32, then it’s time to consider replacement; if they’re at 2/32 then you need to replace them as soon as possible!
Don’t have time to swing by the shop? Use the penny test. Turn the penny so Abe’s head is down, and put it in the tread. If you can see the top of his head, you have 2/32 or less.
Check Your Headlights
Headlights wear out. But there really isn’t a way of telling when they need replaced until one conks out completely! But checking your headlights is more than just seeing if one is burnt out.
How dull are the headlight covers? Road debris, blowing snow, sand, and all sorts of material can dull them up over time (they’re made of plastic after all). If yours are looking cloudy, then it’s time to buff them out. There are some DIY methods using toothpaste, baking soda, or sand paper. But if you want them to really get clear; a kit is advised.
Get a Tune Up
When is the last time you took your car in for a tune up? Chances are it’s been a while. Tune ups are those things that we often forget about, and suddenly remember when things start to go clunk.
If you haven’t kept records, then it’s likely time for one. It will cost a few hundred bucks, but it’s well worth it to ensure there are no major problems coming up, and that you won’t suddenly be left stranded.
What’s cheaper: $400 for a tune up, or a tow truck and an engine rebuild? I’ll give you a hint, it’s the tune up.
Clean Your Vehicle
Finally, it’s spring cleaning time! A clean vehicle is a safe vehicle, so don’t let yours get dirtier than necessary.
