Back to School Vehicle Maintenance Tips
7 Tips Before You Head back to Class
In a couple of weeks, you’ll be heading back to school. Maybe it’s your first year after high school, maybe you’re an upperclassman. The point is that you’re going to be getting back into the groove, and you need to make sure that your vehicle is ready for the semester.
Here at Big Sky Collision Center, we want to make sure that you are driving a safe vehicle. As the best auto body repair shop in Billings, our goal is to give away plenty of information so that you’re not wondering what to do. Before you pack the last of your bags, make sure these items are done on your vehicle.
Change and Top of Fluids
There’s a good chance that you’re not going to take the time out of your busy schedule to get the oil changed on your vehicle. If you are like most college students, you really aren’t driving that much anyway, so an oil change can easily last you all semester. But you have to get it done!

There are many great mechanic shops in Billings. Choose one that you trust and get the oil changed before you head out for school. Most of them will offer a full inspection at no extra charge, so go ahead and take them up on the offer (even if you’re not going to have the work done at this point).
Rotate and Balance the Tires
The snow will be here sooner than you think. And even before that, the rain will be here. If you notice that it’s time to replace your tires, get it done! New tires, with their fresh tread, make a world of difference and they can help you stop and avoid a crash.

If your tires are new enough, and you don’t have to worry about tread life, at least get in there and make sure they are rotated and balanced. Just head back to where you bought the tires as most will offer lifetime rotate and balances.
Check the Brakes
That full inspection included with your oil change should include a brake check. Modern brakes will last a long time, so if it has been a while since your last change, you could be getting pretty close. You can do this one at home if you have a few tools and a couple of hours.

Complete or Schedule Minor Auto Body Repairs
Billings just had a major hail storm that wrecked up a lot of homes and cars. This means auto body repairs are going to be booked far in advance. The good news is that if it’s minor and not threatening the performance of the vehicle (like hail damage), then you can schedule the repairs for when you’re back at the end of the semester.

Hail damage comes in two forms. Minor hail damage can be fixed with paintless dent repair (PDR). But when it gets really bad, and the dents are extensive, then PDR isn’t an option. Instead, we have to replace panels, and that can take a bit longer to complete.
Get it Detailed
There’s no better feeling than getting into a clean vehicle. The smell, the feel, the look… it all culminates in an overall better and safer driving experience.
