6 Ways You Can Save on Your Auto Insurance
Don’t Cut Coverage; Cut Costs
Car insurance is one of those things that are a pain to pay for every month, but you’re so glad you have it when the time comes that you need to use it. In order to drive legally in the US, you have to maintain some minimum coverage, but many of us opt to carry full coverage in order to protect the investment that we have in our vehicles.
Here at Big Sky Collision Center, we want to make sure that the auto body repair process is as painless as possible. That means we have a goal to educate you, our customers, on all aspects of the repair process, driving tips, vehicle ownership, and even just some great drives through our beautiful state.
Take a look at the 6 ways you can save on car insurance.
Shop Around – When is the last time you even looked at your car insurance? If it has been more than a couple of years, then it’s time to take a look! Insurance companies are constantly competing with each other, and their rates are constantly adjusting. Shop around a little and see what rates are looking like with other companies; you may be able to save a lot of money and get the same, or better, coverage with another company.
Discover Discounts – There are a bunch of discounts available, but sometimes you have to ask for them! If you have a teen driver that gets straight A’s, ask about the good student discount. Accident free discounts, multi-car discounts, defensive driver course discounts: they all add up and many companies will offer a lot of them.
Bundle Up – This discount deserves its own line because of what you can get from it. Most people know that if you use the same company for home and auto you get a discount on both. But what if you rent? Opt for a renter’s insurance policy! Some companies offer such a big discount that your total monthly bill actually goes down with the additional policy on there.
Up Your Deductible – If you can afford a $500 loss, why are you carrying a $100 deductible? This one you have to do some math to see if it’s going to save you enough. For example, if raising your deductible to $500 from $100 saves you $20 per year, it will take 20 years to save enough to cover that difference ($500 minus $100 equals $400. $400 divided by $20 equals 20). If you stay accident free, then you might as well save even a few dollars.
Improve Your Credit – Credit is only needed if you’re planning to take out a loan… right? Not anymore. Your credit score is often used for more than just loans; that includes car insurance rates. The thinking probably goes along the lines of, “If you can be trusted to maintain excellent credit, you can be trusted to be a safer driver.”
Pay Less Often – Most companies charge a convenience fee to break your bill into smaller chunks. When you add it all up, paying monthly can cost you as much as 20% more over the course of the year. If you can afford to pay yearly, or even semi-annually, you can end up saving quite a bit of money.
