6 Insurance Falsehoods to Be Aware of
Don’t Let Insurance Get in the way of Fixing Your Car
Insurance is one of those things that we hate… until we need it. Then we love the fact that it is there to protect us. The only problem is that insurance is in the business of collecting premiums… not paying out claims. So they will often try to make it so that the repairs are harder to process.
Don’t fall for these insurance falsehoods! Most companies aren’t propagating them, but they have been repeated often enough that many people still believe them. Here are some of the myths that you should be aware of when it comes time to make a claim to have your vehicle fixed.
You Pay the Difference at an Auto Body Shop of Your Choice
Most people know that you get to choose the auto body shop. The insurance company can make a suggestion that you take the vehicle to the shop of their choice, but you get the ultimate choice. One of the myths that you may hear is that your claim is only approved for a certain amount, anything over that amount and you have to pay for it yourself.
The truth is that you have insurance to repair the vehicle. If your chosen shop is a little higher, you don’t have to pay the difference.
Your Claim will be Delayed at the Collision Repair Shop of Your Choice
Some insurance companies will try to let on that you can go to whatever shop you want, but if you want the work done sooner, then you have to use their preferred collision repair center.
The truth is that when you choose a collision repair center, the amount of time that it takes to get the work done is based on how busy the shop is. Here at Big Sky Collision Center, we pride ourselves in being the best auto body shop in Montana. That means there is often a long waiting period after big events like a major hail storm.
We Can Only Deal Directly with Our Preferred Auto Body Shops
Sometimes you will get the runaround when dealing with insurance. One way they may try to discourage you from going with the auto body shop of your choice is to say that they can’t deal directly with any shop except their preferred shop.
We deal with insurance companies daily. It streamlines the process when we can deal with them directly, and you don’t have to act as the middle-man.
We Pay the Biggest Payout you Plan Allows
As we mentioned, your insurance company is in the business of collecting premiums and not paying out on claims. When you have filed a claim, there should be no problems having your vehicle repaired. But what about those “extras” that come with a crashed vehicle?
If you miss work, need a rental, you’re injured, or anything over and above the simple costs of having the vehicle fixed, you may have a bit of a battle when it comes to a fair settlement.
You Have to Accept a Settlement by a Certain Date
Here’s the situation: your vehicle is worth $8,000 and the repairs will cost $10,000. The insurance company has deemed it a total loss, or totaled, and they offer you a settlement of $6,500. You look up the vehicle and believe it’s worth $9,000 and deserve closer to that amount for your settlement. You are told you have 30 days to accept the offer or it will be rescinded.
Don’t fall for this tactic, it’s only to pressure you into taking a smaller claim than you deserve. The deadline is arbitrary, and if you feel it’s unfair, you can argue (or get an attorney if you need to), and hold out for a fair claim.
You don’t get a Warranty Unless You Use Our Shop
Insurance companies don’t want to pay a claim twice. So they like to partner with reputable shops that offer warranties. The falsehood here isn’t an outright lie; it’s just masking the whole truth.
If you choose an auto body shop that is recommended by the insurance company, you will likely get a lifetime warranty on the work. If you don’t choose their recommended shop, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you don’t get a lifetime warranty. Any good shop will offer a warranty.
