5 Tips to Keep Your Vehicle Scratch Free
Avoid Unsightly Scratches with These Tips
How many times have you walked up to your vehicle and noticed a big scratch that you are certain wasn’t there yesterday? If it has happened once, it has happened too many times! Scratches, dings, dents, scrapes, and paint rubs generally won’t affect your vehicle’s performance, nor will they cause furthering issues (depending on their severity of course), but they look bad!
Here are a few tips how you can make sure that your vehicle remains scratch free so you can enjoy its pristine condition for as long as possible. Then, when it comes time to sell or trade it, you get top dollar.
Don’t Touch It!
We love our vehicles so much that often we go up and give them great big hugs… or is that just me? Here’s the thing though, unless your vehicle was recently washed and there is absolutely no dirt on it, touching it will scratch it. Any dirt that is trapped between you and the clear coat will dig into the surface putting tiny scratches.
Of course, if you set things on your car, and they slip off (or even wiggle just a bit) they can cause even bigger scratches. And for goodness sake, don’t write “Wash Me” on it!
Put it In the Garage
The two biggest causes of scratches to your vehicle: people and the weather. Getting it in the garage, under cover, away from scratchers, is the safest way to prevent unwanted nicks, dings, dents, scratches, graffiti, or break-ins.
Not all of us have garages though. So the next one is for those who can’t quite get completely out of the elements.
Watch Where you Park
In the driveway is safer than on the street. In the open is safer than under a tree. If you have to park outside, find a place away from potential falling branches.
When you’re out shopping, it’s tempting to drive around until you find a great spot up close. If you’re truly diligent about maintaining a scratch free rig, park closer to the back of the lot where there are fewer vehicles around. And never park next to a cart return.
Mind the Weather
People brushing against your vehicle, or worse, intentionally keying your vehicle, are big causes of scratches. However, the weather can throw some nastiness at you!
Pay attention to upcoming storms. High winds can not only knock branches down, but if it has been dry for a while, the blowing dust will wreak havoc on a paint job.
Keep it Polished
We advocate detailing your vehicle every three months, and waxing at least every six months. Why is that? Because the wax offers a protective layer to the vehicle that will help deter minor scratches.
When your vehicle is clean, it is better able to prevent scratches. Brushing against it won’t scrape the paint, because there are no dirt particle to get trapped between you and the clear coat (remember that from a couple bullet points up?).
