5 Preventable Non-Collision Damages
Not All Damage is from a Collision
Here at Big Sky Collision Center, we specialize in fixing body damage. While collisions cause the majority of the damage to your vehicle, there are other ways that your vehicle can be damaged that don’t involve a wreck. Fortunately, the majority of them are preventable.
We have rounded up the top causes of vehicle damage, and want to share with you how you can keep your vehicle looking great.
Park Farther Away
One of the leaders in non-collision damage is parking lots. Here you can run into all sorts of troubles that result in dings and dents in your rig. With the high winds that we get here in Billings flying doors are the main cause of damage in parking lots. But rogue shopping carts are also the cause of a number of dings.
Combat this by parking just a little farther from the door; fewer cars and fewer carts to damage your rig.
Keep Things Tidy
Another major factor in damage to your vehicle is other humans. It’s a sad fact that there are people out there that want to take things that aren’t their own. The best way to remove the threat of people trying to steal from you, is to not give them the opportunity to steal from you.
Keep your car tidy so any ne’er-do-gooder that looks inside will only see items that are not of value.
Keep Things Clean
Your vehicle should remain clean. It’s not only nicer to drive a vehicle that is clean, it is also safer when there are no distractions of dirty windshields and messy interiors. Keeping it clean, however, isn’t all about making sure that you are safer on the road. Keeping your vehicle clean also helps to prevent damage to your vehicle. Dirt, bird droppings, sap, and grime all wear your vehicle out prematurely.
Spot clean between professional auto detailing to ensure that you are preserving your vehicle.
Cover it Up
Many of the things that can damage your vehicle come from above. Here in Billings, we often refer to these falling objects as hail. While hail damage can be repaired, often with paintless dent repair (PDR), but why not prevent the damage before it occurs? Keeping your vehicle under cover is the best way to do that.
Park in a garage if it’s available, under a carport if not, or cover it with a car cover if it will be parked for a while. Try to avoid parking under trees as bird droppings and sap can be acidic to your car’s paint.
Move Up Higher
Around Billings we don’t get too many floods. Most of the area is well out of flood range. But there are times when we get smaller flash floods. There are two circumstances that can still occur with your vehicle. If you’re in a flood prone area, be sure to park up higher. The second issue is when you try to cross a flooded roadway. There’s a saying, “Turn Around Don’t Drown.” Water is powerful and can sweep your vehicle away easily.
Don’t park unnecessarily long in a flood plain to prevent damage (which is often irreversible).
